Admiral's 2006 Score Card
Looking back at the predictions I made over the course of the year...top 5 things I got right, and top 5 things I got wrong:
CORRECT:
1) Koetter made a huge mistake letting Sam Keller go...beginning of the end for Arizona State.
Koetter lost his job, in large part over this very poor decision. Arizona State has hired Dennis Erickson. We'll see how that goes.
2) Phil Rivers will be a great QB, and the Chargers will dominate the AFC West.
Check.
3) USC would lose to either Oregon, Cal, Notre Dame, or UCLA.
I was right, but I definitely couldn't have guessed at the time which one it would be.
4) Jake Plummer's days as the starting QB of the Broncos are numbered.
Yup. Not the toughest call in the world to make, but accurate nonetheless.
5) Matt Leinart will make the teams who passed on him regret it.
Largely true. I would say over half of the teams who passed on Leinart would rather have him now than whoever they picked. Including the Texans at #1.
WRONG!
1) Vince Young will never be a starting QB in the NFL.
I'm very happy to say that I was completely, entirely, 100% wrong about Vince Young. He's the next big thing.
2) The Texans taking Mario over Reggie was not as bad as people think.
No, it was worse. Reggie is clearly going to be something special. Mario...eh, not so much.
3) The Tigers will miss the playoffs.
Oops, did I say that? I guess it was wishful thinking, since they kicked the crap out of my A's on their way to a World Series.
4) The 49ers brought in Trent Dilfer to be a starter.
That may have been what they had in mind, but Alex Smith is showing signs of life.
5) The Jason Grimsley saga will force Bug Selig to get serious about controlling drug abuse in baseball.
Nope. If this didn't do it, nothing will (except maybe the public outcry when Bonds breaks the HR record next year).

"These predicitons might change down the road...the Tigers will have always won the 2006 World Series."
The Tigers never won the 2006 World Series...they lost to the Cardinals. They did, however, win the ALCS in a year where I thought they wouldn't even make the playoffs. The Tigers did stumble down the stretch though, like I thought they would...but not as much as the Red Sox did.
VY and Bush...you can take those guys to the bank. VY is going to change the way OC's and GM's think about the QB position, the way that Vick should have. Saying that VY wouldn't even get a chance to start was my biggest misstatement...bigger than saying the Tigers wouldn't make the playoffs.
Bush did what I thought he needed to do to succeed (but at the same time thought he wouldn't be able to do)...he bulked up but didn't lose his quickness. He is going to be a terror, catching balls out of the backfield and breaking DB's ankles.
Finally seeing the light eh? I tried to told ya 'bout Vince! He's a football player, period! And a winner at that. Also, I doubt the Titans would take Lienart over Vince. He's directly responsible for 4 W's, and he should have beaten the Colts twice.
Also, Bush is still highly overrated. RB and DL are the easiest positions to project from a players rookie year. For the most part, if you get significant time at those positions you are what you will be in your rookie year. Folks were trying to compare this cat to Sayers and Faulk. I said from the beginning that this dude is Eric Metcalf; lo and behold, take a look at his stats and performance and he's just that. He'll never be the one and only RB on anyone's squad. In fact, right now he's only the 4th or 5th best rookie RB (Maroney, Jones-Drew, Addai, maybe J. Norwood in that order).
Plus when you consider the fact that he's the only one of these five who has a significant portion of the playbook designed specifically for him, it might even exaggerate the comparison in Bush's favor. The only good offensive game he had was forced, and didn't come in the normal flow of the game. He's exciting, but he still can't run between the tackles, which means he'll always be a hybrid.
